VIANOVATOJES ROME: MONUMENTS AND SUBWAY

 ROME METRO AND MONUMENTS:

There are 3 METRO LINES in Rome LINE A  and LINE B , plus a third one that is under construction and will pass through PLAZA VENECIA ( LINE C ). Lines A and B flank the   HISTORIC CENTER on both sides. For this reason, I needed to complement my visit with the use of the rest of the public transport.

In this blog, apart from the METRO, I have used the TRAM lines : line (3)  and line (8) , the urban bus 64 and to return to my accommodation the  URBAN BUSES , specifically in my case, line 51 , which runs through the historic centre and stopped next to the hostel where I had my accommodation.

NOTE : The B metro line ( blue ) does not pass through the Trastevere district, it appears like this in the graphic for reasons of space, it continues towards the bottom of the drawing, which is why I have taken this small artistic license.

I recommend the bus option to return to your accommodation after a busy day of sightseeing. You just have to look for the city bus that passes near your hotel. From what I could see, most city buses have their route through the center of Rome, with stops on the main streets and squares of the city:  PLAZA VENECIA , VIA CORSO , VIA PLEBISCITO and the TERMINI train station .

The METRO PASS (24, 48, 72 hour PASS and the WEEKLY pass) includes the metro line as well as city buses and trams.

The "walking" times are approximate. It is more or less the time it would take any person at a normal pace. What you will have to use is "GOOGLE MAPS" to walk around, orient yourself and locate the monuments.

Main stations of the metro network and their landmarks:

LINE A:

ANAGNINA ➨ Manzoni  ➨ Termini  ➨ Republica  ➨ Barberini ( Trevi Fountain )  ➨ Spagna ( Spanish Steps )  ➨ Flaminio ( Piazza del Popolo )  ➨ Ottaviano ( Vatican )  ➨ BATTISTINI .

LINE B:

LAURENTINA  ➨ Basilica S. Paolo ( Basilica S. Paolo )  ➨ Circo Maximo ( Circo Maximo )  ➨ Colosseo ( Colosseum )  ➨Termini  ➨ IONIO - REBIBBIA .

Once you have completed your visit to Rome, I invite you to visit my  "monuments and metro" blogs  of 👉🔗 MADRID ,  👉🔗 PARIS ,  👉🔗 LONDON .

THREE ZONES

I divided Rome into 3 different monumental zones:

1) ROME monuments: Roman archaeological ruins .

2) ROME monuments: Historic center of Rome .

3) ROME monuments: Vatican City .

From here you can plan your own routes.

ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL RUINS

The first route was dedicated to visiting the entire area surrounding what I call "ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL RUINS".

Nearest metro stop: 🚇" METRO COLOSSEO ".

  • TANK
  • TRIANO THERMAL BATH
  • OTTOGANA ROOM
  • DOMUS AUREA
These ruins are located in a small park next to the COLOSSEUM, with free access. Compared with the rest of the Roman remains, they are not particularly significant, although they do have great archaeological value.
  • COLOSSEUM
Tickets are required for both the COLOSSEUM and some of the following monuments.
  • ARCH OF TITUS
  • ARCH OF CONSTANTINE
  • ROMAN FORUM
  • ARCH OF SEPTIMIO SEVERUS
  • VITTORIO EMANUELE II MONUMENT
  • CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS
  • HOUSE OF AUGUSTO
  • DOMUS PALATINO
  • PALATINO STADIUM
  • DOMUS SEVERIAN
  • MOUTH OF TRUTH
  • CIRCUS MAXIMUS

HISTORIC CENTER ROUTE

My second route went through the historic center of Rome, starting in PLAZA DEL POPOLO and ending at THE VATICAN :

The start of the route begins at the metro station🚇" FLAMINIO ", a 3-minute walk towards Piazza del Popolo

  1. PIAZZA DEL POPOLO , (1st option) 7 minutes walking towards the MAUSOLEUM OF AUGUSTUS  (on the dates I was there it was closed and under construction) plus 9 minutes walking towards PLAZA DE ESPAÑA .
  2. PIAZZA DEL POPOLO , (2nd option) directly walking in 10 minutes towards the
  3. PIAZZA DE ESPAÑA , 12 minutes walk towards the ➽
  4. TREVI FOUNTAIN , 4 minutes walk to the ➽
  5. PIAZZA COLONNA , 6 minutes walk passing by the TEMPLE OF HADRIAN towards the ➽
  6. PANTHEON , from here we can take two alternatives:
    1. If you haven't visited it yet, it's a 13-minute walk there and a 13-minute walk back to the  VITTORIO EMANUELE II MONUMENT  or continue the route towards PIAZZA NAVONA.
    2. Continue towards  PIAZZA NAVONA , 4 minutes walk from the PANTHEON and then continue towards the ➽
  7. FOTANA PALAZZO GIUSTIZIA , 7 minutes walking to the ➽
  8. CASTEL SANT ANGELO , 12 minutes walk towards the ➽
  9. VATICAN CITY .

VATICAN AND SAINT PETER'S BASILICA

On my third route I went in depth with a visit to:

  • VATICAN ,
  • ST. PETER'S SQUARE ,
  • ST. PETER'S BASILICA ,
  • THE SISTINE CHAPEL  and MUSEUMS.

OTHERS

Finally, other monuments:

BASILICA SAN PAOLO , To get to this monument we have to take the metro, it is  about 4 kilometers from the center of Rome ( METRO LINE B ), metro stop🚇" BASILICA S. PAOLO ".

BOCCA DE LA VERITA , about 11 minutes walk from the metro stop 🚇" CIRCO MAXIMO ". You can easily visit it when you take the tour of the "Roman archaeological ruins", it is located 3 minutes from one end of the CIRCO MASSIMO.

VILLA BORQUESE , about 11 minutes from the metro stop "FLAMINIO" (METRO LINE B). I was not convinced by this visit.

METRO

At first it may seem a bit absurd to buy a transport pass looking at the distribution of metro lines, but combining metro , tram and city buses can be very interesting and convenient.

On the dates I traveled to Rome (December 2024) I used a 48-hour pass for 12.50 euros for 2 days and the third a 24-hour pass for 7 euros .

It is said, and I have confirmed, that there are practically no inspections or controls on travellers. But for 19.50 euros I spent 3 days travelling without limits and with ease throughout the city.

Tickets and passes are very easy to buy. I bought them from the vending machines in the metro facilities (they have a Spanish language option), but they can also be bought at newsstands and tobacconists.

BUS - TRAM:

BUS 64 - TRAM 3 AND 8

The BUS LINE (64) crosses the historic center and runs between the TERMINItrain station  ("TERMINI" stop) and THE VATICAN ("CAVALLEGGERI / S. PIETRO" stop), on the left side, 1 minute from the colonnade of Vatican Square.

View from bus stop 64 next to VATICAN Square:

Among others, the intermediate stops that may interest us are:

🚍 Stop: "Republica" ➜ REPUBLIC SQUARE.

🚍 Stop: "Ara coeli/Plaza Venecia"  ➜  PLAZA VENECIA.

🚍 Stop: " Argentina "  ➜  near the  PANTHEON  or stop "C. SO. VITTORIO".

🚍 Stop: " Emanuele/navona "  ➜ next to  PLAZA NAVONA .

The drawback of this line is that it is almost always "crowded".

TRAM LINE (8)

I used this line to visit the iconic Roman district of TRASTEVERE , where you can enjoy countless shops and restaurants. The " Via della Lungaretta " is its main street from which countless alleys branch off, inviting you to wander aimlessly and at a set time.

This line starts at the " ASTALLI / VENEZIA " stop, next to  PLAZA VENECIA , and continues further on to the " VIA TORRE ARGENTINA " stop until the TRASTEVERE area

Photo from the starting stop at PLAZA VENECIA:

Main stop in TRASTEVERE: " MASTAI ", next to the entrance to the main street of this neighborhood: "Via della Vinagreta" .

TRAM LINE (3)

This line is interesting because it has stops next to the "COLOSSEO" and the "CIRCO MAXIMUS", and it also connects with the METRO line A  at a stop next to the " MANZONI " metro station.

It runs through the TRASTEVERE district and stops at " TRASTEVERE / MIN. PUBBLICA ISTRUZIONE ", about 8 minutes from the main street of this district " Viale de la Lungaretta " where most of the restaurants and shops are located.

The transport lines; metro, buses, trams can change schedules and routes over time, for this reason when you travel you should update the information on the official public transport website of Rome.
