VIANOVATOJES BARCELONA SUBWAY AND MONUMENTS

BARCELONA: MONUMENTS AND SUBWAY.

Basically five metro lines run through the MONUMENTAL ZONE of Barcelona: LINE 1,  LINE 2,  LINE 3LINE 4 and LINE 5 .

LINE 3 (green) runs through the heart of the city. From there, as shown in the graph, we can connect with the other lines (lines 1, 2, 4 and 5) and go to other interesting and monumental areas.

LINE  3 runs alongside the main monuments and places of interest in Barcelona: "PLAZA DE ESPAÑA" , "PLAZA CATALUÑA", "MONTJUIC",  "EL MONUMENTO A COLON, it runs along the "RAMBLA DELS CAPUTXINS" and passes through the "PASSEIG GRACIA". This layout allows us to change routes at any time and go to other important monuments in the city, connecting with the other metro lines.

I bought a 3-day metro pass for 26.30 euros (February 2025). Unlimited travel on the metro, city buses, including CYTI BUS 150 which I used to get to CASTELL de MONTJUIC.

In the following graph I show the metro lines and the main metro stations that I used during my visit to BARCELONA:

LINE 2

LINE 2 is useful for getting from the  "PARAL-LEL" metro station   or from the  "PASSEIG DE GRÁCIA" metro station  to the "SAGRADA FAMILIA" monument.

LINE 3

LINE 3 is probably the most interesting line for tourists, allowing us   to start the tour in the MONTJUÏC PARK  from the "ESPAÑA" Metro station .

It runs parallel to the   RAMBLAS , from  the  "DRASANES" or "LICEU" Metro station  we can visit all the monuments adjacent to this street and delve deeper into the  GOTHIC QUARTER .

Then, continue along the " PASSEIG DE GRACIA " (metro station "PASSEIG DE GRACIA") where we can admire Gaudí's artistic talent in his houses: "HOUSE BATLÓ", "HOUSE MILÁ (PEDRERA)" and enjoy observing the houses "LLEÓ" and "MARFÁ".

From the metro station "PASSEIG DE GRACIA" you can connect with LINE 2 which will take us to LA SAGRADA FAMILIA .

Continuing with LINE 3 to the DIAGONAL" metro station , we can continue towards the "LESSEPS" metro station , which will leave us about 15 minutes walk from the "PARQUE GÜELL" (following Carrer Travessera de Dalt and continuing along Carrer de Larrard) or connect with LINE 5  and head towards the "SAGRADA FAMILIA".

Park GÜELL is located about 3 km from the historic center.

LINE 4

LINE 4 is a good option for getting to the port area,  EL BORNBARCELONETA, CIUTADELLA PARK or OLYMPIC VILLAGE.
It runs along one side of the Gothic Quarter and stops near PLAZA SANT JAUME ( Metro station "JAUME I" ). It continues towards Paseo de Gracia,  Metro station "PASSEIG GRACIA".

The JAUME I metro station is ideal, depending on your schedule, to begin your visit to the Gothic Quarter and end at the RAMBLAS.

LINE 5

LINE 5 takes us to the most emblematic monument in Barcelona, " LA SAGRADA FAMILIA " (metro station "SAGRADA FAMILIA") . Further on, at the next station (metro station "SANT PAU"), is the Sant Pau Hospital , but if we prefer to continue walking from the Sagrada Familia along Avenida de Gaudí, we can easily get there in about 12 minutes.

MY VISIT.

On this trip, my approach was different from that of other big cities. The layout of the metro network allowed me to improvise on the fly.
On my first trip I visited the SAGRADA FAMILIA , the HOSPITAL DE PAU and PARK GÜELL  (LINE 5 and  3).

From " PLAZA DE CATALUÑA " taking the LINE 1 at the "CATALUÑA"  Metro Station I visited the "ARC DEL TRIOMF" and the " GLORIES TOWER ".

My second trip was through the " PLAZA DE ESPAÑA " and the "PARQUE DE MONTJUIC" (PALAU NACIONAL). If you don't have much energy and don't want to walk too much, I recommend you use the CITY BUS 150 to go up to the "CASTLE" and the cable car (the option I used).
BUS  150 runs from "PLAZA DE ESPAÑA" to "CASTELL". The price is included in the metro pass. It also has a stop next to the "ESTADIO OLÍMPICO".

Between journeys, using LINE 3 or LINE 4 ,  I alternated visits to the GOTHIC QUARTER , PASEO DE GRACIA  or LAS RAMBLAS to eat, have coffee or walk.

The LINE 2 connects the "PARALELL" Metro Station with the PASEO DE GRACIA and the SAGRADA FAMILIA .

Finally, I visited the CIUDADELA PARK and the PARLIAMENT OF CATALONIA ( LINE 4 ). This visit can be done easily from the "JAUME I" Metro Station , walking to the Ciutadella park and ending at the "BARCELONETA" Metro Station .

My advice is to prepare your own route according to your priorities and time needs, taking into account the graph in this blog.

METRO

On this trip, I used a 3-day unlimited travel pass (26.30 euros), with access to the metro, city buses and bus 150 that runs through the entire Montjuic park to Castell.
From my point of view, the interesting tickets and vouchers for tourists are the following (prices February 2025):

SINGLE TICKET: 2.65 euros.
2 DAY BONUS (48 HOURS): 18.10 euros.
3 DAY BONUS (72 HOURS): 26.30 euros.
There are 2 other 4 and 5 day passes.

The ticket is validated  from the first trip you make. There are 2 types of cards, one that is activated by contact, usually for regular users with special vouchers. The single ticket and the multi-day vouchers (2, 3, 4 and 5 days) are activated at the access control by inserting them into a small opening (February 2025).

For more information, please visit the official Barcelona Metro website, where you will find updated prices and possible incidents on the metro network.
