BERLIN: Monuments and Subway

The Berlin subway (U-Bahn) has 9 lines. Three lines primarily serve the historic center of Berlin:
the orange U2,  the brown U5, and  the purple U6 .

Most of the stations on the  U2,  U5, and  U6 subway lines   are located in close proximity to Berlin's most important monuments.

To complement my visit to Berlin, I used the U1 and U3 subway lines  (to visit the Berlin Wall ), the S7 commuter rail line  (to visit Potsdam and the Berlin Wall from Alexanderplatz Square), and the 100 city bus .

There is also an extensive tram network. In my case, I used the M5 tram, which dropped me off right in front of my accommodation.

BERLIN SUBWAY

Of all the metro lines and stations, for me, only those shown in the graphic above are the most interesting to complement a walking tour.

Interestingly,  there are NO TURNSTILES for ACCESS CONTROL in Berlin's subway stations; their policy is based on trusting travelers.

Using public transport, including the Berlin subway, is a true experience of " TOURIST FREEDOM ". Access to the subway without barriers or turnstiles, once you've purchased your travel pass, allows you to visit without obstacles, saving time and bringing places closer together.

Tickets must be validated  at machines located at station entrances or on platforms. 24-hour passes only need to be validated once, on your first trip. Inspections are common .

There are different tickets and passes available for the Berlin subway. For more complete information on timetables, maps, and lines, please consult the official Berlin subway website.

The passes or tickets that interest tourists are those that cover zones  AB  and  ABC .

Zone  AB  corresponds to the historic center of Berlin and with  ABC  you can travel to both Berlin-Brandenburg Airport and Potsdam (Sanssouci).

RATES 2026

AB Zone:

  • Single ticket:  4 Euros  (Valid for 2 hours)
  • 24-hour ticket:  11.20 Euros

ABC Zone:  (To travel to the Airport and Potsdam (Sanssouci)):

  • Single ticket:  5 Euros  (Valid for 2 hours)
  • 24-hour ticket:  12.90 Euros
There is a tourist transport card with discounts on admission to many monuments and attractions in Berlin: " Berlin WelcomeCard ".

How the Berlin subway works:  👉🔗  How the Berlin subway works

BERLIN WALL

Subway lines U1 and U3

To visit the  BERLIN WALL  you can take the  U1 and U3 lines, from the " HALLESCHES TOR " metro station (  U6 line) to the " WARSCHAUER STRABE " metro station (U1  and  U3 lines).

Another option to visit the Berlin Wall is to use the  S3 S5 and S7 trains departing from ALEXANDERPLATZ  station  to the " WARSCHAUER STRABE "  subway station .

BUS - LINE 100

To visit "the Victory Column" (SIEGESSÄULE) we can take BUS 100

Main stops of BUS 100:
Alexanderplatz 🚍 Museumsince 🚍 Under den linden 🚍 Bradenburger Tor 🚍 Reichstag - bundestag 🚍 Siegessäule 🚍 Zoologischer Garten.

The stop that corresponds to the "SIEGESSAULE" monument is: "Grober Stern".

If you have time, after visiting the REICHSTAG you can take this line and continue to ""ZOOLOGISCHER GARTEN", where the KAISER MEMORIAL CHURCH is located .

This bus line is very interesting; it travels through the entire center of Berlin, from the  Reichstag , passing by the Brandenburg Tower, continuing along Under den Linden avenue  to Museum Island, and ending at Alexanderplatz Square.

POTSDAM

S7 LINE (Commuter Rail)

The  S7 line  belongs to the Berlin suburban train network, it will take you from the "ALEXANDERPLATZ", "HAUPTBAHNHOF" station or "ZOOLOGISCHER GARTEN" to  POTSDAM  (ABC zones):  SANSSOUCI PALACE.

BERLIN/BRANDEBURG AIRPORT (Flughafen, in German)

How to get to the center of Berlin from Brandenburg Airport. You will need a ticket that covers zones ABC. The train station is located in Terminal 1  of the airport.

If your flight arrives at Terminal 2, following the signs you will have to leave the Terminal and go out onto the street. About 200 meters to the right you will enter Terminal 1. Easy, even for me.

The Airport Express (FEX) is the fastest mode of transport and the one I used . Trains run every 15 to 20 minutes, and the information panels at the stations are very clear. You can't miss it.

 Stops:

  • In Berlin: Berlin Hbf (central station) - Potsdamer Platz - Südkreuz.
  • Schedule: Runs 24 hours a day.

⏭  S-BAHN (S9) ➨ BER AIRPORT / SPANDAU  Line: Main stops

  • Alexanderplatz - Friedrichstrabe - Berlin Hbf (central station) - Zoologischen Garden.
⏭ Finally, some Regional trains are designated with the initials RE and RB.

In addition, there are bus lines that also connect to the city of Berlin, which may be of interest to you depending on the area of Berlin where you are staying.

OTHER DATA

➤Walking distances in the historic center, from one end to the other, can vary between 2 and 4 kilometers. For example, from  Alexanderplatz you can walk to  Braderburger Tor in 35 minutes  (2.6 km).

➤ Two  major avenues form the backbone of the city: " Friedrichstrasse " and "Unter den Linden".

➤Berlin's main train station is " Berlin Hauptbahnhof ". It connects to the U5  subway line, which takes you to the city center where you can connect to other subway lines.

MY VISIT

The approach in this city was to "go with the flow". In the end, the route that emerged was more or less the most logical.

ROUTE 1:

Start at Alexanderplatz and follow Under den Linden avenue, visiting all the monuments and points of interest along this street until you reach the Reichstag. If you have time, you can take  bus 100  from a stop next to the Reichstag and continue  to the Victory Column

The entire route has stops on the U5 subway line  and the BUS 100.

ROUTE 2:

Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the Air Ministry.

I started this route at Alexanderplatz station  , taking the S7 train (you can also take the S5 and S3 ) to the Warschauer Straße subway station. From this station I took the U1 or U3 subway line to the Hallesches Tor subway station and walked from there to visit Checkpoint Charlie , before continuing on to the Air Ministry (Simmerstr and Wilhelmstr).

Alternatively, you can start the route in the opposite direction by taking the U6 subway line to the " Hallesches Tor " subway station .

ROUTE 3:

Charlottetenburg Palace, Olympiastadion, Potsdam and Sanssouci .

The Palace and the Stadium can be reached via the U2  subway line.

First, visit  Charlottenburg Palace. From the Sophie-Charlotte Platz metro station, it's about a 15-minute walk to the palace. Then, continuing on the U2 line, I went to the Olympic Stadium (Olympia-Stadion metro station). On the way back, taking the same U2 line, I got off at the Zoologischer Garten station  and took the S7  train  to Potsdam and Sanssouci Palace.

LINE S7: BERLIN ➨ POTSDAN (ABC Zones)

To go to Potsdam you need to have a ticket for the ABC zones , which includes the journey from Berlin and the transfer within the city of Potsdam.

METRO STATIONS IN BERLIN where you can catch this line (S7):

Alexanderplatz - Friedrichs Trabe - Hauptbahnhof - Zoologischer Garden.

When visiting Potsdam, I recommend starting your tour on foot. From the train station to the Alter Markt (Old Market), it's a short walk. From there, continue walking to the Brandenburg Gate, which you reach by crossing a busy pedestrian street lined with shops. Very close by, behind the monument and slightly to the right, is the entrance to the gardens of Sanssouci Palace .

For the return trip, you can save yourself a few minutes of walking. Very close to the Brandenburg Gate is a bus stop where buses stop that will take you to the train station. Specifically, I took bus 650 towards the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). There are also some trams that run this route.
